I have done research for the past four decades on the United States power elite. My main interest has been in the extent to which the power elite has included members of previously excluded groups (Jews, women, African Americans, Latinos, Asian Americans and LGBT individuals), the reasons they have or have not been included, and the effects on their identities once they have become part of the power elite. I also have done research on a variety of topics in personality and social psychology, including the psychological effects of unusual names, birth order, attitudes toward and knowledge about nuclear war, self monitoring, music preferences, and signature size as an unobtrusive measure of status and self-esteem. I also have edited an anthology, with Gene Borgida, on the topic of collaboration ("Collaboration in Psychological Science: Behind the Scenes").
